Letter: The information comes from census records, old newspaper accounts, county histories, cemetary records, land deeds, and the like. Edwin SEARLS (youngest son) and my great-grandfather Daniel J. Searls (oldest son) were sons of Gilbert Searls and Elizabeth HALSTEAD. Both parents were born in New York but moved to Hinckley, Ohio in 1834 and to Winnebago County, Seward Township Illinois (near Pecatonica) in 1857. Gilbert built a frame house in Illinois (which is still being lived in - I have seen and photographed it), and then he died abruptly at age 49 in 1860. My great-grandfather took over the farm, helping to raise his youngest brother Edwin. Elizabeth died in 1907.
